After a tough beginning this year, I listened to Ben's advice and got my pool in good shape after 2 years of mustard algae.

I closed my pool here in NJ the day after labor day and had the chemicals and all other reading right where they should be. I do not cover my pool and we had a very warm September so my pool has now been taken over by algae.

Should I leave it as is until I open in the spring or should I add chemicals even though the filter is closed?

You can add chlorine, preferably bleach. Just distribute it around the pool and try to stir it up. You can use a paddle or a submersible pump to move it around. I didn't close mine till the end of September because the water was too warm and I didn't want algae either.
