After login, I have no permissions - config issue?

I can browse the different forums when not logged in. After logging in, I'm restricted to the "Getting Started" forum and clicking on different links displays the following message:

"strasser, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation."

What can I do to re-activate or reset the account? There apparently is no way to activate my account. I'm stuck.

What you are experiencing is normal for a new member. Until your registration is complete, you do have to log out to see the rest of the forum. This is only a temporary inconvenience, however. Once it is finalized, you will no longer have to log out first.
