Or are Total Dissolved Solids something I never really need to worry about with respect to iron stains and balanced water?

15 year old vinyl liner pool, 20K gallons. Never had a staining problem for first 8 years but since then it's ascorbic acid regimen every year to keep pool looking nice.

90% of sanitation done with bleach/liquid chlorine with only about 10lbs of dichlor used each year to keep CYA up.

Very few other chemicals added as Ph and TA always in specified ranges with no adjustment save for minor beginning of year and a bit after ascorbic acid tweaks.

For whatever reason, pool seems to run itself w/ regular bleach process. Calcium Hardness is something I mostly ignore w/ vinyl liner. Do have a heater though, 15 years old and running fine. Maybe ignorance is bliss after all.
