I am installing a new liner for the first time and was wondering if I cut the old liner at the base of the cove, leaving a circular portion of the old liner covering the floor, would that be a good idea for added protection or are there un-forseen problems in doing that?

I don't see any problem with doing that at all--in fact, if I'm not mistaken, that's what Watermom (one of my co-mods) did when she replaced her pool this past year. I'm sure she'll comment on it soon to verify, but anything you can get between the bottom of the new liner and the ground is just extra insurance against things poking through! :)

I didn't do it on the new pool that was installed this spring (going from a 24ft AG to a 27ft AG), but did so on my old pool a few years back when we were replacing the liner.
