I have have had a pool for 10 years and lurking for about a year. I finaly grew tired of the expense and bad advice I have been recieving from pool stores, ordered a test kit and started folowing your advice.
On my last trip to the pool store i was told my CYA was 52 and it needed to be at least 120 they sold me 10# of calcium telling me this would hurt my vinyl liner. After reading your site I have decided to return it to the store and get my money back.
Do you agree?

Absolutely! (Calcium has nothing to do with raising CYA levels.) When you get your kit, run the full set of tests and post your numbers for us to take a look at.
Welcome to the Pool Forum! Glad you decided to go ahead and join us instead of just lurking!

Congratulations for not falling for all that...
BTW, we recommend CYA levels of around 50 ppm for the average pool.....and if they won't take the calcium back, it makes good sidewalk de-icer :)

I appreciate the answers but between the Grandkids jumping on me and the wife yelling I messed up my #s. CYA was 52 they said that was OK. Hardness was 82 they sold me 10# of calcium for the hardness.. They also had me put 20# of calcium in it last April when I opened the pool. That application raised the hardness from 58 to the 82 it is now. Reading the forum gives me the impression that the $50+ I have spent on calcium this year is a total waste of money.
Thanks for your replies

Yep. $50 down the drain. Vinyl pools do not need calcium added to them. But, now that you have found the forum, hopefully we can help you keep from wasting any more money!
