Jacks Magic Catalyst 3000

Hi all hope everyone is doing well.

After a few years of pool ownership via a house we bought. I'm finally getting around to figuring out what the Jacks Magic Catalyst 3000 does? It's hooked up to my DE filter but I've never touched it since I moved in. Just now I started to search but I figure I'd post here too. It looks old like it was there when the pool got put in and Ive read its some kind of water purifier.

Does anyone have any knowledge of these things and should I be using it? I have a pic of it but don't see where I can attach it here.
