I purchased a solar cover reel about 3 years ago - and after the 3rd season, both the cover, and the straps that connect it to the cover reel were totally worn out.
The straps were dry rotted, and the cover was delaminating terribly.
This year I got a new cover - and then realized I would need new straps.
After shopping around at various online pool supplies stores, I realized that they were all trying to rip my head off for a simple polypropelene strap. So now I give you what I have learned.
Instead of buying the 'replacement strap and buckle kits' from the pool store (for $20-$40) just order new straps in bulk and cut to fit. Your buckles are probably plactic, and in fine shape - all you probably need is a new set of straps.
I ordered 30 feet of 3/4" Polypropylene lightweight 'webbing' from strapworks.com @ $0.15 / foot and very reasonalble shipping.
I figure I have enough strap for years to come and at a fraction of the cost ($9.30 after shipping). I ordered on Monday - had the straps on Wednesday using USPS Priority Shipping.
Hope this tip is helpful to someone out there :)
