Hi!
Have just moved into a new house which has an above ground round 15ft pool (14 m2). With a little help from a friend who has a pool back in UK have started to get the pool ready: so far I have been basically re-pH ing and chloride shocking for the last 4 weeks, with a green pool still the result! Am I just being too cautious with the chlorine etc??

The pH was ~7.2 yesterday and tonight I have:
Free Cl- ~10ppm
Total ppm: (no colour change when tablet added) (Have a gaurdex kit)

Have been filtering non stop for ages and am on the verge of turning it into a sand pit for the kids!

Tonight I dumped ~700g chlorine shock in as a last resort!

Any advice welcome thanks!

A chlorine level of 10 ppm and pH of 7.2 is fine.

We're really limited in the help we can offer folks outside of North America -- most of the products we recommend are unavailable, and all of the test kits are!

This thread covers some of the issues, and links to a decent testkit that may be available to you:

Thanks.

After dumping a lot more chlorine shock in and leaving the pool filtering overnight the pool is now blue! It is quite cloudy still so have added floccing agent.

Also I've just pH'd and the Guardex kit started at ~6.8 but then slowly (minutes) turned very alkali - is this interference from the free chlorine?

Most likely. If the cyanuric acid is low, and the chlorine is high, phenol red is converted to a different indicator, chlorophenol red (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chlorophenol_red).
