As a new forum user, I am not able to search the forum. I would love to, because I know this question has to have been answered before. That being said, I am a new pool owner, 21 x 42 AG installed at the end of last season. I have had is "go green" on me twice, due to my inexperience. As has been hinted elsewhere, every time I go into the pool store, there is some other chemical that I need to add to fix the latest chemical imbalance. I am intrigued by the BBB method of maintaining and am going to run with that method.

If I understand it, Baking Soda is used to raise Alkalinity, Bleach is for chlorine, and Borax appears to be for pH. I have run across reference to Soda Ash (Not Borax) to raise pH. Is this a better product? Where does one find it?

By the way, the information I have found here is awesome! Thanks.

Hi Carter, and welcome to the forum!!

You're right--baking soda raises alk, bleach raises chlorine, and Borax raises pH. Soda Ash raises both alk and pH at the same time. Both soda ash (aka Arm and Hammer washing soda) and borax can be found in the laundry aisle at WalMart, Target, or any other grocery store.

You can search the forums now, just use the google link in my sig. You will have to log out to read your results until your membership is upgraded, but that' s a temporary inconvenience.
