is there a cheap but good sand other than special pool filter sand that one can use?

I've never heard of anything else. But, do make sure that you do not use play sand that is sold for sand boxes. You do need pool filter sand. It is a little more expensive, but the good news is that you typically don't ever need to replace it. The sand in my filter has been used for the past 12 seasons. Occasionally, you do need to top it off but that's it.

As far as I know, the only properly graded sand is labeled filter sand.

There's a sandblast grade that is too coarse. Quartz masonry sand has way too many fine particles. I've seen both used, with a variety of resultant problems.

Thanks for the helpful information! Switched to salt last year - this year filtration ! Had heard reference to sandblast & all I found at Box Stores was Masonry sand.
