Shocking and "stop yellow" help please

this is my first time to this forum and I would very much appreciate any feedback.

The pool store today told me I should use "Stop Yellow" to get rid of the film I am seeing on top of my water. He told me to shock the pool and then add it. I have a SWG so I assume I can just super chlorinate, but do I wait until the 24 hours is over? Can I be swimming while this shocking is going on? I think I am in way over my head.

Hi, Laurie,

Run your pump 24/7 for a few days and don't buy anything or shock. I'll bet the film is gone.

If not post back and describe it in a little more detail and we'll help get rid of it :)

I bet you a dollar it's pine pollen just like we got hit with this weekend. Looks like afilmy coating in the water, but you can see it on everything outside of the pool too.

Just by filtering and backwashing (or cleaning your filter if you have a cartridge filter). So, like Dave advised, just keep filtering 24X7 and you'll soon have it cleaned up.

Skimmer socks in your skimmer are a cheap and easy solution to pollen in the water. You can find them at Walmart and most pool stores. If I am not mistaken mustard algae will collect on the bottom of the pool and not float on the surface and the "yellow' products can create a whole set of problems of their own once you use them.
Also, instead of superchlorinating with your SWG it is better and faster to use bleach. Salt cells are rated in hours of use and running the cell at full power for the usualy 24 hours a superchlorinate cycle takes will shorten the cell life. Bleach is a LOT cheaper than replacing a salt cell early!

Thanks everyone, I will try all that before using the "yellow stuff". There is no problem with the bottom of the pool.

I also think you've got pollen on the surface and recommend the skimmer socks for that and other surface debris.

If it turns out that you do have yellow algae ... do not use the yellow out stuff.
Keep it simple ... chlorine will treat it.

Post back here if you need more help but I'll bet the skimmer socks will do the trick for you.
