We are renters with a pool, unsure what to do next

Long story but basically we are renting and are trying to take care of the pool ourselves, previous owner left and the new owner did not and does not live here and he's renting to us so we are kind of on our own a bit, here's what we've done so far with the pool store down the street.


New filters
Skimming and brushing pool everyday
Running Pump
About a week and a half ago added 2 bags of shock, then added a third bag

(according to pool people) added 1/2 gallon acid let pump run 30 minutes
added black algae destroyer did not run pump for 24 hrs per directions cleaned filters then let pump run

Pool looks like Seafoam green and Cloudy

Water more blue, still has green tinge and Cloudy

(according to pool people) added small amount of "blue stuff" to bucket of water, cleaned filters, added to pool while pump running. Waited a few hours then added 3/4 of jug of stabilizer let pump run 24 hours

Friday - 5/25/2012

Water still same and cloudy....
cleaned filters let the pump run.

The filters are 14 small round cartridge filters and everytime we take them out the are pretty black but become white with about an hour or more of hosing them off. Right now the pool is blue, there's three steps in the shallow end and the third step is kind of cloudy in the water. Any help appreciated and any more information needed just let me know.

Your most critical problem right now, is the low pH. Any pH reading below 7.0 is acidic and can damage the pool. You need to bring it up ASAP. Go to Walmart and pick up several boxes of 20 Mule Team Borax (laundry aisle) and a couple of boxes of baking soda. They may have the large bags of baking soda in the pool supply aisle. Also, while you are there, get several jugs of plain, unscented household laundry bleach (generic is fine). See if they have an OTO/Phenol Red kit (yellow and red drops) or an HTH 6-Way kit (not test strips.) These kits will suffice until you can get a good kit. (We recommend the Taylor K-2006 or 2006C but it is only available online. See the testkit link in my signature below.)

We also need to know exactly what all you have put into the pool, meaning ingredients and not just 'shock' or 'blue stuff,' etc.

When you repost, please tell us what type of pool this is, volume and size of pump. Create a signature line (see link in my signature below) and put all this info in there along with the type of filter. This makes it easier for us to be able to help.

Stay out of that pool store. They are making things much worse.
