When I opened my pool in early April my CYA was at 55ppm. I have only used bleach to this point and a new CYA test today shows 30ppm. Can you help with the following?

Is it time to start using my trichlor tablets?

How much of a CYA increase can I expect per trichlor tablet?

The manual for my Taylor kit says “never put a trichlor tablet in the skimmer”, why is that?

My current levels are:

FC = 3.5
CC = 0.0
TC = 3.5
PH = 7.4
TA = 100
CH = 150
CYA = 30
SI = -0.35

Thanks to this forum, my water has never been clearer.

For every 10ppm of chlorine that trichlor adds, it also adds 6ppm of chlorine. You can put trichlor in a skimmer. Ben says that it is ok as long as you never have the pump off for more than 8 hours before turning it back on because trichlor is so acidic. Because of its acidity, it also causes pH to drop so keep an eye on it while using the pucks.

Did you do your own CYA testing? Did you use a disappearing black dot test? Do you have a Taylor K-2006 kit? If so, please add that info to your signature line.

I tested my CYA with my Taylor K-2006 kit and have added it to my signature line. Thanks.
