Is there a household chemical I can use to increase water hardness?

calcium chloride. Used as a deicer and in making pickles and Tofu. Usually available in 50 lb bags. Tetra is a good brand for pool use, btw. Either the dihydrate or the anhydrous is ok to use.

You're in NJ -- a very high proportion of pools in the North East have vinyl liners.
If YOUR pool has a liner, you don't NEED calcium hardness, from any source! Pool stores just like to sell it to everybody, even though only concrete pools need it!

If you have a heat pump do you have to be concerned? We have a vinyl lined pool with low calcium

With high calcium, yes. With low calcium, no.

Thanks PoolDoc! I won't worry about raising the levels.
