Shock question?

I have green algae on stairs in shallow and deep end of pool, and on spots on the side. This is my brothers pool. He is too lazy to take care of it, so I have taken over the task. I have not shocked the pool yet, do you think that this is where I should start? Are there any brands of shock that work better than others? Another thing, he is only running his filter about 6 hours a day? Should I run this longer? Thank you for the help. John

If you have algae, then yes, you need to take the chlorine up to shock level. How high shock level is for a pool depends on the CYA level. Can you supply some current water testing results taken with a drops-based kit so we can better help you? If he doesn't have a good test kit, the only one we recommend is the Taylor K-2006 or 2006C which you can find here: test kit info page (www.poolforum.com/pf2/showthread.php?14994)

We also need to know more about his pool --- type of pool, volume, size of pump, type of filter. Also, tell us what products have been used thus far in treating the pool.

Also, he should be running his pump 24/7 while trying to clear the pool.

Give us more information and somebody here will try and help.

One last comment --- if he is too lazy to take care of his pool, why does he have one? Are you prepared to take care of it permanently? If not, why don't you have your brother come over here to Pool Forum and maybe he can learn how it doesn't have to be too difficult to maintain a pool. (Not trying to be critical. Please don't misinterpret my comments as such.)
