New season approaching - New Pump and Filter needed

Hey guys/gals,

I hope everyone's year has treated them well so far! Last year we purchased our house and with all of your help, got us through are first, albeit short, pool season.

We are in need of a new pump as the one that came with the house is extremely loud and horribly inefficient. Was looking at the Intelliflo, but wanted to get some expert opinions here.

The current filter is a D.E. filter. It seems to work fine, but is the original with the pool and could probably use replacement so I'm looking for recommendations here as well.

The pool is 25k gallons and Im not sure about sizing requirements for either piece of equipment.

I saw another thread going regarding this but the OP has an above ground pool and I didnt want to hijack the thread.

Sorry about the delay.

Given that you are look at the Intelliflo, can I assume that energy efficiency is important? If so, I have a few comments and questions.

First, regarding the Intelliflo. It can be a very efficient pump but it depends on how it is used. Also, a two speed pump can be more cost effective depending on how much you pay for energy and how long you plan to run the pump (i.e. # turnovers).

Second, regarding the filter, DE and sand filters suffer from the head loss in backwash valves so as far as energy is concerned, they are not my first choices. If energy consumption is more important and you really arn't married to the DE filter, then I would go with a cartridge filter. For a 25k pool, I would recommend at least a 325 sq-ft cartridge filter. The only time I wouldn't use a cartridge filter is if you tend to open the pool when it is a swamp. They can be pain when cleaning up algae but so can DE.


So on to the questions:

What do you pay in electricity ($/kwh top rate)?

How many months per year do you have your pool open?

Do you have to clean up a lot of algae if/when you open the pool?


If you are interested in the cost comparison of a two speed and Intelliflo, I will need the following information:



Current Pump Make/Model
Height of pump relative to the pool water level
Diameter and number of individual suction pipes from the equipment to the pool
Diameter and number of individual return pipes from the equipment to the pool
Diameter and number of return eyeballs
Filter type and backwash valve model if known
Filter PSI reading at the desired valve settings and pump's highest speed setting.
Optional: Pump suction reading (in-hg) - not necessary but improves accuracy
Heater - yes or no
Pool/Spa Valve - yes or no (If there is a spa, the number of jets and size)
Check Valves - Number and locations
