I sent pics of the pool located at the home I plan to buy to a local pool company. The pool was built in 60's and is concrete - maybe block. The home was a foreclosure so it has been empty for awhile and the remaining water in the pool is green. The water level is just at the place where the steps meet the floor. The pool company told me the pool probably has a leak and it will cost $20,000 to repair with a vinyl liner. They said a whole new deck has to be poured. They said the pvc pipe under the deck probably needs to be replaced. Isn't there a way I can fix this for a lot less?

Can it be done for less? Possibly. But without pictures and more information, it would be really hard to offer any useful advice.

I'd suggest two things:

1) take a full set of pictures, and send them to poolforum AT gmail DOT com, and I'll post them. Doing so may lead to some helpful advice.

2) see if you can find another decent pool service guy in your area, and have him take a look and offer prices. Do NOT tell him what the other guy said, or show him the other guy's info.
