Hi guys!! My pool water has been great thanks to you all! I noticed however, that sand is now getting back into my pool. I changed out the guts of my sand filter last year. Reading some of these threads I think the culprit is my pump which is 1.5HP. My filter is 150# which is too small (from reading the forum) for that pump and I think it may have damaged it. Although, I've had the same pump for years and it worked for a long time with no problems until the little teeth inside finally gave way due to old age, I'm assuming. Anyway, I want to buy a new filter and would like to know how big a sand filter do I need to handle the 1.5HP pump?
I have been looking at the haywards but haven't seen what size pump is safe with them.
I have an AG 13K gallons.
Thanks and hope ya'll are having a great summer!

I have a 300# filter with a 1 HP pump, on an approx. 29K gallon pool. I'm not the equipment person on this forum by far, but I'm sure the ones who are will be along shortly to help you out.

Just wanted to say it's good to see you back this season, and thanks for the support!

Thanks Janet! I talked with a lady at a pool store and she seems to think that my model of pump is ok for my filter. She has the same set up as I do. The 1.5HP is not fully rated and is not like a commercial grade 1.5HP. She had the same problem with sand getting in her pool and said it was her spider gasket / multi valve gasket that needed to be replaced. So she talked me out of buying a new filter since I replaced the guts last year. So I'm going to go try that route and see what happens, but I would still like to know what size filter to get. Or what HP of a pump I need.
Your welcome for the support! I'm new this season actually. And where is everyone? Usually I get a reply a little quicker. Ya'll helped me tremendously with my algae problem and saved me tons of money. The people that work at Walmart give me looks when I walk out with 10 - 182 oz of bleach though. LOL

I actually did read your post yesterday but hesitated to respond because I already shared my opinion with you in regards to a 1.5hp pump in a 13K gallon pool in this thread: http://www.poolforum.com/pf2/showthread.php?11218-Algae-loves-my-pool

It could be your spider gasket but I still think as I did before that your pump is probably just too big and forcing debris through the filter. (I have the same size pool as you and I have a full-rated 1/2hp inground pump-- not commercial grade -- and it is plenty big enough. I have a 200# filter.) I hope you find out that it is the spider gasket because that will be a cheap and easy fix for you. Good luck.

I contacted hayward directly and gave them the model number for my pump which is the SP 1593. My 1.5HP is fine for the filter I have surprisingly. They even recommended another type of filter, the S180T which is 150# like the one I have. Mine is just a different brand.
Thought I would just give you that input since it was someone directly from the manufacturer.
Thanks and I'll let you know if it is the multi valve gasket.

Well we changed out the gasket and luckily that was the problem!! Water looks great and nothing is accumulating on the bottom like it used to. Sorry Watermom, didn't mean for you to repeat yourself. I did go back and reread my other post.
Thanks for all your help!
