Just a few quick questions on sand filters. My older filter will not work correctly anymore, so I'm in need of a new one. Pool is 22,000 gallons, pump is 1hp 2 speed Hayward super pump. Would a 24" Hayward be to large for my needs? Would a 22" be better, and are Hayward filters reliable? You read so many different thoughts on line, so I thought I'd ask those who I trust. Thanks for your help, I'll need to order soon. Denise

As for any filters you really can't go too large. The slower the water flows the better the filtering. Too small of a filter for the pump and dirt can get rammed through. I'd go with the 24 if the price difference isn't that great. Not sure what the sand weight is for the 24 though. As for reliability I have a 300# that's going on 14 years and the only thing I've had to replace is the spider gasket in the multiport valve.

Good idea! I have a Hayward 2 spd 1hp Super pump and a 200# sand filter. 200# is just adequate. Had I known then what I know now it would be 250# or 300#. However, since it functions perfectly well and ain't broke, so I'm not fixin' it! BTW, sand filters actually filter BETTER at low speed when you have a 2 speed pump. They just catch more stuff when the pressure isn't as high.

Thanks Carl, I didn't know that. :)

Several years ago, I noticed the my filter seemed to do better on low speed, so I asked the question. The general consensus of analysis was that yes, everyone else saw this happen as well.
