hey everyone im new to the forum and to home ownership, i just moved in and i noticed that my pressure gauge is reading 30-35psi so i followed directions given to me by a friend and backwashed the filter. it helped a little bit but now when the pump is on it will shoot right to 30psi after a few moments the caretaker makes a strange noise and then the pressure creeps to 22psi. and then right back up to 30. the pool was built in 91 it has a triton II tr60 sand filter and the pump says its a 2.20 hp. the house did have a solar heater on the roof at one point but it was removed. is the pump to much for the filter? it lookes like the return line from the filter goes threw the caretaker assembally "pop ups" and back into the pool, is this normal?? and there dosent seem to be anyway to bypass it. im scared i will come home to a busted line!! i wish i could post a pic of the set up but i dont know how.
thanks everyone!!!

A 2 HP in-ground pump is WAY too much for a tr60 (24") filter.

Mail the pics to me at poolforum AT gmail DOT com, and I'll post them. Ideally, send several large pictures and I'll edit them.

thanks pooldoc ill send some pics, i did a little bit more research and i found my pump is a 1.5hp, but i was looking at the TOTAL hp. but i did talk to a friend that had the same problem with his shasta pool, " they are both 20 year old" the pop up assembally is not a care taker but a shasta pop up cleaning system. he said he removed the internals of the cleaning system gears and all, and reattached the dome with noting inside and his pressure went from 30psi to 12psi and he uses a vaccum plugged into skimmer to clean the pool, my only question is since the water returns to the pool threw the popups, will it still be able to do so or will i have to take out the popups and install screens? thanks for any input at all!!

Welcome to the forum.
Do you have normal sidewall returns in addition to the floor popups and a valve to select where the return water goes? Filter size aside, 30-35 psi is probably in the totally blocked range. Whatever you do don't run the pump for more than a few minutes with pressures this high. If the flow is totally blocked you can raise the temperature of the water in the pump high enough to warp the case.

there is no switching valve, the return goes from the filter strait into the shasta cleaner " the floor cleaner " its 20 year old. when ever the gears inside switch to a diffrent set of pop ups the pressure drops to 22psi then goes right back up to 30. i believe the restriction is in the floor cleaner control head. also some pop ups where replaced, could the outlet holes on the floor pop ups be to small causing the restriction?

I really don't know anything about that cleaning system. Hopefully someone else has some ideas.
