I have a challenger 1hp and it was last serviced 7-8 years ago. I think it had all the seals replaced then. This year after opening I discovered the pump when turned off was sucking air from somewhere (sounded like around the large gasket. Today, however, I found that there is visible water leaking from the area where the motor mates to the pump. Are these the shaft seals that are leaking?

How big a job to do this with the kit? Or, does it make sense to replace the pump and motor since they have seen many many years of hard use.... If so, any recommendations?

Thanks

Jason

Jason,

I'm no expert on this, but I had a similar problem with my hayward super pump 2 years ago. It sounds like the main seal is going, which is not uncommon. It is not a hard fix. I was able to find an exploded view of my pump (at the hayward site) online. I think the cost was about $10-20 and took about 40 minutes.

What I can tell you is DON'T LET THIS GO!!!! Get it replaced ASAP, or you probably will end up smoking the bearing in the motor. (Don't ask me how I know this).

Like I said, I'm no expert, just throwing my 2 cents into the pot.

Good luck
