View Full Version : Will high chlorine level harm my new SWCG?

Timing is not ideal here, I just got my new SWCG installed today (Hayward). We leave town for 7 days tomorrow. No time to add salt to the pool and watch to make sure the thing is operating correctly before we leave. I was thinking I would just bump my chlorine level up to about 8-10 (12K gallon pebbletech pool with CYA at about 50) so it won't be green when I return. This level of chlorine is about what we would lose in 7 days this time of year in AZ.

I predict it will be a low chlorine level when we get home, maybe a dangerous 2 but hopefully I can dump some cl. in before algae takes over. I could make the cl. level even higher but... My question is whether this high level of cl. might harm my new SWCG. If so, then I guess I will add salt and CYA and pray it works while we are gone!

Thanks for your help...

You don't have time for CYA to dissolve and do you any good, so I would go ahead and add your bleach for now and start your new SWCG up when you get home. People shock their pools with chlorine all the time with a SWCG installed, so I don't see why it would hurt anything. I would get it up to shock level at 15 ppm, though....

If you don't already have CYA in your pool, leave a floater with dichlor or trichlor in it while your gone- shocking to 12 ppm could be gone in 1 day in AZ sun/heat conditions!
