View Full Version : Keep or Dump Sand every year?

For years and years I dutifully dumped my sand from my Proline sand filter and refilled it at opening. I recently switched to Hayward becasue the parts are easier for me to get. The guy who delivered it told me I didn't need to dump the sand. In fact he said with Hayward, it is difficult to do.
Please chime in with a discussion of this. I have created in 15 years a small beach next to my pool with all the years of sand!

I have a DE filter, but from reading these forums, I believe you aren't supposed to change the sand. It should be good for years before it needs changing (unless you're doing a baquacil conversion or something).

MaryLee is correct. Keep the sand.

It is agreed by most pool dealers here in Arizona that you should change your sand every 5 to 7 years.

Don't change the sand! It filters BETTER as it gets older and dirtier. You should only change the sand if you have a problem (like it's gummed up).
I'm currently on my 4th season with the same sand and don't expect to have to change it for years.

I agree with Carl. I am on my 5th season with my pool and I have never changes the sand.

I'm starting my 9th season with the same sand. Think maybe I should add a little because of the little that is lost when backwashing...but...maybe next year.

Same here, on my 5th swimming season with the same sand in my Hayward filter. They work better the dirtier they get.
