I just had a doughboy AGP 18' installed with a deluxe skimmer. I also have a hayward sand pump, that I had previously. The issue I have is, there are not shutoff valves from the skimmer or return to the pump. I'm trying to figure out the best way to connect some valves to the pool.

On the return side, it simple, I can just replace the stock setup with one that is threaded on the outside of the pool allowing me to hard pipe it and put a valve in there somehwere.

The issue is on the skimmer side. It doesn't look like its possible to change out the output of the skimmer, so I have a 1 1/2" nipple sticking down where the current hose attaches.

Would you recommend using a rubber coupler there to attach to hard pvc, or use a hose and put the valve down on the pump itself? My concern is if I put the valve on the pump, then I still have a hose that can leak and no way to shut off the water if it needs to be replaced.

I have seen some covers for the doughboy skimmers that go on the inside of the pool, to stop the water, but I cant find one for the deluxe skimmer, though they may be the same size.

Thanks for you help and input.

My skimmer is connected to the flexible PVC pipe with a rubber adapter with two clamps. So that would be one option to install a valve.

However, in over 25+ years of AG pool ownership, I have never had a valve on the suction side of the pump that feeds out of the skimmer.

I do suggest that you take some precaution to keep the PVC out of the sun.

Welcome to the forum!

You might do well to invest in 2 Hayward SP 722 valve with a male adapter thread and a female adapter end (I'm going from memory on the part # :o) These will thread into the bottom of the skimmer and the return fitting and allow you to reuse the existing fittings to connect the hoses

If you want to 'hard plumb' a couple of 2 way valves into the system, we can certainly help you with PVC plumbing methods and techniques:)
