This customer called me and wants me to take a look at his pool. He says he has blue spots at the bottom of his pool. I am guessing it's calcium, I have not seen the pool yet and I don't know what the chemical readings are. I am going over there Friday but I was wondering what you guys may think it is and how to get rid of it. I will take some pictures of the pool Friday and post them.

Thanks

Calcium would not cause blue spots. Scale is usually white to tan. Blue is caused by copper. Period. End of story. It would be possible for copper stains to form on existing scale, however.

Sources of copper can be algaecide, heat exchangers exposed to low pH (usually from use of trichlor), the use of ionizers and "mineral' systems (ecosmarte, ClFree, Nature2, Poolfrog) or copper based "alternative sanitizers" (Pristine Blue, SimplyBluePool), copper pipes, and even the fill water itself.

The customer does have a heater and have never used any kind of metal sequestering agent.

What is the best way to get rid of the copper stains?

Thanks.

Here's the link to Mbar's ascorbic acid treatment to remove metal staining:

Don't know if there's a better way specifically for copper or not, hopefully one of the stain "experts" will chime in....

I just finished up at the customers house. I tried putting the asorbic acid on the blue stains and it did not do anything. I really think it's the plaster itself that is screwed up I will upload some pictures when I get home. Hopefully the pictures came out good enough.

Here are some pictures I have taken, it might be kind of hard to see the blue spots on the plaster.

The pool was re plastered about 4 years ago and it looks this bad?

Jasheon,
Can you resize those pictures so they aren't so big? Thanks.

It isn't that it isn't allowed, but they are so large that for some people it will take forever to load. Plus, it is just easier to look at a picture when you can see all of it at one time instead of having to scroll.

Thanks.
